A Vanity Affair: An Original Poem Written & Performed by Aditi Singh

The Paper Planes Journal presents an original poem written and performed by a young poet, Aditi Singh. It was written from the perspective of Dorian Gray and how he denies accountability of his influence and how he engages in vanity and later experiences ruin. The title is inspired by the Thackeray classic Vanity Fair. In the poet’s own words, “I was going to write about vanity as a sin because obsession with beauty is something I, along with many people my age, relate to. But I couldn’t get much matter out of it. But I had recently reread The Picture of Dorian Gray and I thought of rewriting it from his perspective. Subtle narcissism and extreme vanity ruined him completely by the end and it appealed to me.”
